Family Engineering Night at Barkell Elementary

Family Science & Engineering Night at Barkell Elementary School in Hancock, MI provided the opportunity for some of the newly trained Michigan Tech engineering students to share their enthusiasm and some Family Engineering activities with elementary students and families.

Training Workshops with STEM Student Chapters

Joan Chadde & Dr. Neil Hutzler hosted a volunteer training for STEM students at Michigan Technological University. Sixteen students from seven student chapters of national engineering societies participated including: AISES, NSBE, SWE, SHPE, TBP, AlChE, and ASEE. The workshop kindled enthusiasm amongst the chapter representatives, and a second training was planned so more chapter members could attend.

Joan Chadde & Dr. Neil Hutzler at Michigan Technological University led another training workshop with STEM students. Twenty-four students from eight student organizations participated including student chapters of AISES, NSBE, SWE, TBP, S-STEM, AlChE, ASEE, and a student research engineering council. The workshop presented the Family Engineering philosophy and delivery models, engaged the students in doing a variety of short activities, and several of the engineering challenges–which was their favorite part! Three students went on to present activities at a family science & engineering event on November 11, 2011 at Barkell Elementary in Hancock, MI.



Family Engineering Night Held in Springfield, Virginia

Teachers at Newington Forest Elementary School used the Family Engineering program to help them plan an amazing event with exciting engineering activities for families. With over 200 families in attendance, everyone had a great evening full of fun and learning!



Informal Science Educators Get Excited About Family Engineering!

The newly published Family Engineering: An Activity & Event Planning Guide made its debut in the exhibit hall at the annual conference of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) in Baltimore, MD. Already familiar with the successful Family Science and Family Math programs, professionals from science and technology museums, children’s museums, and other informal science organizations were excited to see a new resource for family programming that focuses on engineering.
